چکیده

In this section we present five specially selected and extended articles from the 5th ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement which took place in Banff, Canada in September 2011. This conference attracted 103 full papers fromwhich we selected 33 for presentation and publication, an acceptance rate of 32%. From these, authors of five of the most highly rated papers were invited to extend their papers for inclusion in this special issue which is intended to act as a showcase for our research to the wider software engineering community. ESEM2011 is the fifth in a series of Symposia that aim to provide a forumwhere researchers and practitioners can report and discuss recent research results in the areas of empirical software engineering and software measurement. They encourage the exchange of ideas that help communicate the strengths and weaknesses of software engineering technologies and methods from an empirical viewpoint and are widely regarded as the premier international event for empirical software engineering researchers, investigators and interested practitioners. The five papers included address one or both themes of (i) presenting research results from high quality primary studies and (ii) exploring strengths and weaknesses of competing and emerging research methods. Human factors in software development: On its underlying theories and the value of learning from related disciplines. A guest editorial introduction to the special issue

Human factors play a very important role in Software Development [1]. According to Avison et al. [2] ‘‘Failure to include human factors may explain some of the dissatisfaction with conventional information systems development methodologies; they do not address real organizations’’ (p95 [2]). Software development has been characterized in essence as a human activity [3] where human factors play ...
